Ideat Village Kickoff Fundraiser at Cafe 9

Lys Guillorn, Ludent Tremmel's GNO, The Fighting Cocks, Pearls and Brass, Hygiene Wilder, Murdervan

Okay, so there's a big-ass review of Ideatstock coming, but first I've got to write about the Ideat Village Kickoff Fundraiser at Cafe 9.
The first group I saw that night was Lys Guillorn. I don't know why, but I like her. Her music is gentle and heartfelt. Not normally things I like too much, but hers resonates with me for some reason. She played with a couple of guitar players but no drums.
Ludent Tremmel's GNO would be much better if he never sang. Instrumentally, they had moments where it was pretty interesting. Really, though, it's just a guy with a silly guitar playing crazy.
The Fighting Cocks, I really like. They're so manic, it's compelling. Three guys, one of whom has a 7-string guitar and every song is the Fighting Cocks theme song. I just learned something - according to an old New Haven Advocate article, the guitar player used to be in 2nd generation punk band Fear from Los Angeles. That's crazy stuff. I absolutely hated them based on the footage from the Decline of Western Civilization.
Next, Pearls and Brass. They are from somewhere else. It was standard heavy rock. Effectively done, but nothing that blew me away.
Hygiene Wilder put on a good show, in spite of the technical difficulties. Leslie's performance seems much more choreographed than many punk singers.
Murdervan are a grunge band. I don't think there's any denying that. It's as if they were somehow sent here through some time/space vortex from Seattle 1990. They are good, though. Even when falling down drunk by the end of the set.

It was a good night. And not just because I won stuff in the raffle. It showed a lot of support for what's probably the most vital force in local music.
