Catching up: Paul Belbusti at the Space 1/19/2006
I hadn't been to The Space in a while and when I got there, I remembered why; the ridiculous cover. It was $10 to see a bunch of people I don't care about. This is the same place they make you pay to play the open mic. The show was well attended, though. I guess because there were so many groups on the bill.
5 bands played that night. 2 rock acts, 2 folk acts and Paul. Of the folk acts, the first, Kailin Garrity, wrote her love songs with someone "from nashville" and was completely forgettable. Her family likes her, though. The second was Andria Mason and her band was falling apart. The guitar player was an old curmudgeon, but funny. They were breaking up because he wanted to play rocknroll. Her sound was decent, but the songs' subjects were standard neo-folk fare. I hope she writes some weirder stuff in the future. Fred Schafer was the first of the rock acts. The band is from Buffalo, but they've been touring the country. At some point, the leader claimed they were an alt-country band, but I couldn't tell. They just sounded like the generic radio-rock stuff that was around a couple of years ago. Last up was Jim Fusco. I didn't stick around because his MySpace page pisses me off.
Paul's performance was interesting. He did an experimental set with Bobo Lavorgna on upright bass and Chris Zollo on keyboards. The revised Tiger Fight was slow and unsteady, but in a good way. It was as if none of the instruments was comfortable with one another. The highlight of the evening for me was the version of Give Me a Grand Piano. On the album, it's guitar and vocals, but with the keyboards, it became something much greater. Tragically, Paul's guitar setup crapped out in the middle of Demons and Carpenters and he had to continue the remainder of the show with his acoustic. He saved the song well, though. The verse he did without any guitar was kind of haunting and, while the others played, he quickly set up the acoustic and they finished it up almost as if it was intended that way.
The space can be a fun place to take pictures; at least they have lights: http://www.flickr.com/photos/oldangelmidnight/sets/72057594052582247/
