Some Things
Some things
Go to Books and Company this Friday at 7 p.m.. Frank Critelli asked me to get a couple of performers for his Songs from the Sofa series there. Leila Crockett, aka Baby G, and Dave Grazynski, aka Monitor and the Merrimac, will be playing. Both are kind of old-timey, but kind of not. Both make me happy. This show will make me happy.
Books and Company - 1235 Whitney Ave, Hamden. Across from the Playwright. They sell books and coffee. 7 sharpish.

For a while now, I've been thinking about starting a magazine about local music. I've talked to a few people about it and most seem to think it would be a good idea. I don't want to do it all myself, though. I need people to write and to provide other content. I wanted it to be a print magazine, but that's looking like it might be cost prohibitive to do it right. Now I'm thinking about an electronic magazine. Most likely in PDF form. At least to start. Maybe with an annual or semi-annual print version, as funds become available.
I feel like I'm somewhat uniquely positioned to do this. I'm on friendly terms with people from many of the various music cliques in the city. I have a background in journalism and experience with print publication. And I don't have much else going on, really. So, if I can get a stable of talent together to contribute, I'll do it.
It will most likely be called either Sanctuary or The Menace. I will be editor in chief. Because I said so.
I've been playing guitar in a band that does Irish music. We're called The Butcher Boys. We do Pogues and Flogging Molly covers, but mostly we do aggressive versions of traditional songs. We haven't played out yet, but have been rehearsing for a couple of months. It's stupid and fun and I suck, but they don't seem to mind. We need a couple more members, though. We could use an accordion player and we would really like a fiddle player (I'm looking at you, CJ.) We're here: http://www.myspace.com/butcherboys
Now I feel like a whore. Let me talk about something I'm not involved in.
The new Mercy Choir album is very enjoyable. It's unexpectedly eclectic with crazy drum machine sounds, but also very organic. http://www.myspace.com/mercychoir It occurs to me that I don't have a lot of recordings of local artists. I need to build up my archive, I think. If anyone wants to donate cds, I'll be happy to take them off your hands. Hell, I don't even have a Danglers cd.
